Era 0130,000 - 3,600 BBY

The Ancient Galaxy

Origins of the Force

The galaxy long before the familiar film saga: Rakatan domination, the rise of the Republic and wars that outlasted generations of Jedi and Sith. Ancient technology here is bound up with the Force, and political alliances do not yet look the way they will later. The events and games in this section belong to Legends. They show where Star Wars stories get their lost worlds, powerful relics and arguments about what the Jedi Order is for.

The Rakatan Infinite Empire

The Rakata conquer other worlds using slave labor and technology tied to the dark side of the Force. Their state collapses around 25,200 BBY. That decline explains why later civilizations keep finding powerful artifacts whose purpose nobody remembers anymore.

Planets
Spoiler

The best-known Rakatan creation is the Star Forge - a huge automated shipyard near Lehon that draws matter and energy from the local star and can turn out ships and weapons without pause. Its workings are rooted in the dark side, so the Forge also affects those who control it. This is where the Rakatan Star Maps sought by the heroes of KOTOR ultimately lead.

Knights of the Old Republic

The Republic stands against Darth Malak's fleet. The search for ancient Star Maps leads the crew of the Ebon Hawk toward the secret of Sith power. The group is caught between the Order's commands, their own doubts and what the war means for ordinary people on the planets they visit.

Planets
Spoiler

The protagonist is Revan: after his capture, the Jedi rewrote his memory and built a new identity for him. His bond with Bastila and recurring visions gradually lead him back to his hidden past. Malak reveals the truth during their confrontation aboard the Leviathan, changing the meaning of the entire journey up to that point. The Star Forge explains where the Sith get the resources for their fleet. The final choices decide whether the hero shuts it down or claims that legacy of power for himself. Later Legends material builds on one particular course of events; that does not erase the alternatives available in the game itself.

Knights of the Old Republic II

Five years after KOTOR, an exile from the Order returns to a Republic where the Jedi have all but vanished and the Sith are hunting the survivors. A new crew tries to understand why past wars left behind not only ruins but dangerous changes in the Force itself.

Planets
Spoiler

Darth Nihilus, Darth Sion and Darth Traya each tie their power to a warped way of existing through the Force. Their stories converge with the aftermath of the Battle of Malachor V. Kreia turns out to be Darth Traya, and her lessons take on a different meaning once the mentor's hidden goals become clear. Later Legends material identifies the Exile as Meetra Surik. The game itself lets players customize the hero, so this name should not be read as a limit on player choice.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

The Republic and the resurgent Sith Empire are locked in a cold war. Eight class stories show the conflict through the eyes of Jedi, Sith, soldiers and smugglers. Force users and ordinary characters live through the same crisis in different ways: from diplomacy and espionage to power struggles inside their own faction.

Planets
Spoiler

The Sith Empire is ruled by Emperor Vitiate, who devours entire planets.

Era 02~400 - 100 BBY

The High Republic

A Golden Age

The Republic invests in distant systems, and the Jedi help keep its worlds connected. A disaster in hyperspace and Nihil raids test the belief that mutual aid can overcome any threat. A century later, the events of "The Acolyte" show a different stage of the era: a strong Order still holds influence but is not always ready to admit its own mistakes or to see danger that falls outside its familiar explanations.

The Great Hyperspace Disaster and Starlight Beacon

In 232 BBY a hyperspace catastrophe tests the Republic and the Jedi. Starlight Beacon is meant to support Outer Rim worlds threatened by the Nihil. Rescue operations, the settlement of remote systems and the fight to keep hyperspace routes safe show how the Republic tries to be useful beyond the Core.

Planets
Spoiler

The Nihil are responsible for the disaster and for later strikes against major Republic projects. The destruction of Starlight Beacon is an especially heavy blow: what is lost is not just the station but the belief that the Jedi can protect everyone who has put their trust in the Republic. Later stories of the era explore how the Order acts after this loss.

The Acolyte

In 132 BBY an investigation into attacks on Jedi pulls Master Sol back to unfinished business from his past. The story is set a hundred years before Episode I. The hunt for a killer gradually becomes a reckoning with the responsibility of mentors, the Order's hidden past and other traditions of using the Force.

Planets
Spoiler

Sol confesses that he killed the sisters' mother, Aniseya, during the events on Brendok. Hiding what happened that night shapes the lives of Osha and Mae and turns the investigation into a return to a responsibility the Jedi tried to shut out. The Stranger shows that behind the visible attacks stands a dark power the Order failed to recognize for what it was.

Era 0332 - 19 BBY

Fall of the Republic

Last Days of the Order

The blockade of Naboo exposes weaknesses in Republic politics, and the Separatist crisis later turns them into a galactic war. The Jedi become commanders of a clone army, the Senate grants the Chancellor emergency powers, and Anakin tries to reconcile his training with his fear for the people he loves. The films tell the central tragedy, while animation and games add the experience of soldiers, apprentices and ordinary people whose fates are decided by large-scale military choices.

Planets
Spoiler

The Battle of Geonosis begins the Clone Wars. Dooku, the public face of the Separatists, is secretly the Sith Lord Darth Tyranus and works with Sidious. Anakin and Padmé marry in secret. The ending both launches the war and plants a personal secret that will drive Anakin's behavior from then on.

The Clone Wars

Anakin, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka and the clone troopers fight the Separatists. The 133 episodes and the feature film that opens the story fill in the events between Episodes II and III. The series gives the clones individual characters, follows Ahsoka as she grows up and shows how a long war changes an Order that was meant to protect the peace.

Planets
Spoiler

The charges against Ahsoka and the Council's decisions destroy her trust in the Order. Even after the truth comes out, she refuses to return to her old life. Later, the Siege of Mandalore overlaps in time with Order 66, and Rex's story shows how the chips affect the clones' behavior. Planets

During the final operation on Kashyyyk, Sev loses contact with the squad. Boss and the others want to go back for him but are ordered to leave the position and prepare for what comes next. Spoiler

Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

In the last days of the Clone Wars, Palpatine closes in on unlimited power, and Anakin is torn between his trust in the Chancellor and his loyalty to the Jedi. Anakin's fear for those he loves feeds into the Chancellor's political maneuvering. The Republic's military victory looks less and less like a return to peaceful life.

Planets
Spoiler

Anakin helps Palpatine survive an arrest attempt and becomes Darth Vader. Order 66 turns the clones against the Jedi, and the attack on the Temple destroys the heart of the Order. The Senate backs the proclamation of the Empire under the pretext of defending against a supposed Jedi rebellion. On Mustafar, Obi-Wan defeats his former apprentice, but the Emperor saves Vader. Padmé dies after giving birth to Luke and Leia. The twins are separated and hidden, setting up the story of "A New Hope". Anakin's personal aim of saving his family ends with him cut off from it and serving as a pillar of Palpatine's regime.

Dark Times of the Empire

Under Imperial Rule

The new regime inherits the Republic's army and institutions but gradually changes the rules of everyday life. Clones look for a place after the war, Jedi hide their past, and smugglers work between the interests of the syndicates and the Empire. Resistance has no single center yet. Its early forms grow out of concrete needs: helping a fugitive, protecting a child, guiding the persecuted to safety or refusing to carry out a criminal order.

Clone Force 99 and Omega look for a new path after the end of the Clone Wars. Yesterday's Republic soldiers can no longer rely on their old orders. Caring for Omega forces the squad to learn to live outside the army while the new regime decides what to do with the Republic's former defenders.

Planets
Spoiler

The destruction of Tipoca City wipes out the physical center of the clones' past, and the split with Crosshair shows how differently brothers can respond to the new regime. A Spark of Hope

Local protests and scattered underground cells gradually learn to act together. That takes money, intelligence, safe contacts and a shared vision of the future. Andor

Cassian Andor is gradually drawn into the underground. Over two seasons, local resistance, intelligence work and political struggle converge into a single movement. The series pays close attention to money, secrecy, forced labor and state surveillance - without them, the story of the future Alliance would be incomplete.

Planets
Spoiler

On Narkina 5, Cassian is caught in a forced labor system where even following the imposed rules does not guarantee release. The escape and Nemik's last message help him move from opportunistic resistance to a conscious commitment to the Rebellion. Later Cassian takes part in the rescue of Mon Mothma and in getting intelligence gathered by the underground to the Alliance. The ending brings him to the mission that opens "Rogue One". On that mission Cassian will give his life on Scarif. The series shows that his readiness for such a sacrifice grew out of what he lived through rather than being built into the character from the start.

His return to the name Ben at the end of the saga completes an arc in which inherited family history does not cancel out the possibility of making one's own moral choice. After Leia's death and a memory of Han, Kylo abandons his dark role and becomes Ben again. Rey confronts Palpatine with the support of the voices of past Jedi, and an allied fleet helps break his military plan. Ben gives his life to save Rey. Afterward she takes the name Skywalker, claiming a family defined by her teachers and her own choice rather than by descent from Palpatine.

Rey film (announced)

An announced story about Rey after Episode IX and her attempt to build a new Jedi Order. This is a marker for the future, not a summary of a finished film. A possible rebuilding of the Order continues a question the saga left open after Luke: how to pass knowledge on to new students while learning from the mistakes of earlier generations.

Spoiler

In the announced premise, Rey is rebuilding the Jedi Order. At the end of "The Last Jedi", Rey takes the ancient Jedi texts from Ahch-To, so she has not only memories of her training but also a written foundation for the tradition.

Quick briefing

Every journey has a beginning.

01In what order should I watch?

There is no single right order. Here are four common routes through the nine episodes of the saga; spin-offs fit into any of them by in-universe time.

    1. IV
    2. V
    3. VI
    4. I
    5. II
    6. III
    7. VII
    8. VIII
    9. IX

    Release order

This is how audiences first saw the saga, and the big twists of the original trilogy land the way they were meant to. The best choice for a first viewing.

    1. I
    2. II
    3. III
    4. IV
    5. V
    6. VI
    7. VII
    8. VIII
    9. IX

    Chronological

The history of the galaxy from start to finish, which is how the archive timeline is built. Handy for a rewatch, but the prequels give away the secret the original trilogy keeps until Episode V.

    1. IV
    2. V
    3. II
    4. III
    5. VI
    6. VII
    7. VIII
    8. IX

    Machete

A fan order: after Episode V the prequels play as a flashback to Anakin's past, and Episode I is skipped or saved for later. The twist survives, and the end of the original trilogy gains more context.

  1. Episodes and spin-offs

    The wider route

Take any episode order and add stories where they sit on the timeline: "Andor" and "Rogue One" before Episode IV, "The Mandalorian" after Episode VI. The "For sane people" filter keeps the films and main series, "Films only" shows the saga and spin-offs.

02What do BBY and ABY mean?

BBY means before the Battle of Yavin, ABY means after. The battle takes place at the end of "A New Hope" and serves as year zero. In-universe dates are approximate; the release year is listed separately.

03What is inside a record?

Click a record title or "Details" to open its page: in-universe time, release year, era, an article about the background, characters and conflict, plus the context of the period. From there you can move to neighbouring records or show the locations on the galaxy map.

Plot resolutions are hidden in a separate block and open only when you ask. On the main page the "Spoilers" switch turns them on.

04Canon or Legends?

These are two separate versions of the history of a galaxy far, far away. They often mention the same worlds and heroes but tell their stories differently.

Canon
The official story Lucasfilm has kept consistent since 2014. It includes George Lucas's six films, the animated "The Clone Wars" and everything released since: new films, series, games, books and comics.
Legends
The Expanded Universe created before 2014: novels, comics and games that continued the saga for years. After Disney bought Lucasfilm, these stories stopped shaping new plots and were renamed Legends. Some ideas return to canon in a new form, like Grand Admiral Thrawn in "Rebels".
In the archive
The timeline is built on canon. Legends is represented by the ancient galaxy with KOTOR, KOTOR II and SWTOR, plus the Clone Wars era game Republic Commando. These records carry their own label and use dates from the Legends chronology, so their events should not be joined directly with canon ones.
