About this story
A blockade that exposes the Senate's weakness
The Trade Federation begins its pressure on Naboo as a dispute that supposedly can be settled through negotiation. Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi arrive as envoys but quickly find themselves caught up in an invasion. Queen Padmé Amidala has to secure the Republic's help while her world is under occupation. On Coruscant it becomes clear that the size of institutions does not guarantee a quick decision: procedures, disputes and private interests delay the response. In this way an adventure on a single planet first shows why many people in the galaxy might lose faith in the republican order.
Tatooine and an unexpected student
Damage to their ship forces the heroes to stop on Tatooine, where Republic authority has almost no bearing on local life. There Qui-Gon meets Anakin Skywalker, an enslaved boy with exceptional abilities. Freeing him takes risk and trust, not just an appeal to a Jedi's authority. Anakin himself sees the visitors as a chance at a different future, but that chance means leaving his mother behind. His path into the Order begins with an emotional experience very different from the upbringing of most Jedi children.
What the film sets up for the rest of the prequels
Qui-Gon trusts his own sense of the Force and sees in Anakin a possible Chosen One. The Council looks at the boy more cautiously, noting fear and attachments that could complicate his training. This disagreement shapes one of the trilogy's main threads: how to reconcile a very human need for support with the rules of a large Order. Meanwhile, in politics, Palpatine emerges as someone who knows how to use a crisis to advance his own career. So what matters is not only the final battle and the new student, but also who exactly is handed a path to power by the instability.
Route context
Last Days of the Order
The blockade of Naboo exposes weaknesses in Republic politics, and the Separatist crisis later turns them into a galactic war. The Jedi become commanders of a clone army, the Senate grants the Chancellor emergency powers, and Anakin tries to reconcile his training with his fear for the people he loves. The films tell the central tragedy, while animation and games add the experience of soldiers, apprentices and ordinary people whose fates are decided by large-scale military choices.
