About this story
A message that finds a future Jedi
Luke Skywalker lives on the Lars family farm and dreams of leaving Tatooine, but has no idea where he fits in the galactic conflict. Buying two droids changes that: R2-D2's memory holds Leia's message to Obi-Wan Kenobi. An old acquaintance of the family turns out to be a Jedi from the Republic's past, and the pursuit of the droids turns out to be part of a hunt for stolen data. Luke's journey begins with the gradual discovery of a hidden history. What seemed like a distant war quickly reaches his home and takes away the option of simply staying out of it.
Three different ways into the fight
Leia already belongs to the Alliance leadership and acts with a clear political goal in mind. Han Solo and Chewbacca take the transport job first and foremost as paid work. Luke is only learning to see a wider responsibility behind his personal circumstances. Their motives do not automatically line up, so mutual trust is built through concrete risk. Obi-Wan introduces Luke to the Force and to a kind of certainty different from technical calculation. At the same time the film stresses the value of ordinary skills: piloting, repairs, quick thinking and the willingness to come back and help when no deal requires it.
Imperial fear and rebel hope
The Death Star is an instrument of power through the threat of total destruction. Its design assumes that worlds will give up resistance once the price of defiance becomes unthinkable. The Alliance, by contrast, has to seize a small opening before it closes. The Battle of Yavin resolves this conflict at the level of a single military strike, but it does not end the war with the Empire. For the archive it is also a calendar reference point: BBY and ABY date other events relative to this battle. The 1977 premiere year belongs to film history, while year zero belongs to the galaxy's internal chronology.
Route context
The Fight for Freedom
After Yavin the fight goes on: losing one station has not cost the Empire its fleet, its garrisons or its ability to hunt down its enemies. Luke trains, Leia supports the Alliance, and Han has to decide how far his loyalty to his friends extends. Alongside the main story, games show crime syndicates, Imperial special forces and pilots. The events after Endor are a reminder that a decisive victory and the end of a war do not happen at the same moment.

The Empire destroys Alderaan in an attempt to break Leia and demonstrate the station's power. Obi-Wan falls in a duel with Vader, letting his friends escape. During the attack at Yavin, Luke trusts the Force and hits the Death Star's weak point, and Han's return helps him complete the final run. The victory saves the Alliance and makes Luke a prominent figure in the war.
