How separate worlds became a union
The decline of Rakatan rule did not automatically turn the galaxy into a single state. The Core Worlds had to build relations with one another and agree on trade, security and common rules. Legends chronology dates the founding of the Republic to 25,053 BBY. Coruscant became the capital, and the Senate became the place where the interests of different planets were meant to be weighed at the level of the whole union. From the start this was about many societies living side by side, so the Republic's politics would always depend on its ability to reconcile conflicting demands.
Why hyperspace changed politics
A union of planets needs reliable connections. The spread of hyperdrives and the charting of routes made it possible to move people, cargo and messages between systems far more often. At the same time, dependence grew on trade routes, ports and whoever controlled shipping. Distance from the capital still mattered: a Senate decision might apply equally to two worlds, yet their chances of getting help quickly were not the same. Over time, this inequality between the wealthy Core and the distant territories would become a constant source of political tension in stories about the Republic.
How to read this date in the archive
The Old Republic of KOTOR and SWTOR, the Republic of the prequels and the New Republic after Endor are not interchangeable names for one short period. Wars, reforms and changes of government lie between them. This record marks the beginning of a long history in Legends; it does not set an exact founding date for the current canon. Keeping that distinction helps separate the revival of the republican idea from the unbroken existence of the same institutions. In the films, characters appeal to an ancient tradition even though they live in very different political circumstances.
