About this story

A small con with big consequences

Kay grew up in a working-class district of Canto Bight and learned to survive on her wits and petty scams. Her constant partner Nix is a full member of the team: his agility and abilities help distract guards and reach places that are otherwise out of reach. When one job spins out of control, a bounty is placed on Kay. The prospect of a big heist looks like a shot at freedom, but it requires people, equipment and the ability to work with those who have far more influence. The new crew comes together not around a shared political cause but through overlapping interests.

Syndicates as an everyday system of power

On Toshara, Kijimi, Akiva and Tatooine, Kay runs into networks of criminal organizations. For local residents they can decide access to work, protection and resources no less tangibly than a distant Emperor. She has to choose whose job to accept, what information to hide and whether a short-term reward is worth damaging other relationships. The reputation system makes these decisions part of the gameplay. At the same time, the consequences of a single deal do not mean that the whole plot branches endlessly: the main story keeps its own course toward the heist and toward uncovering the motives of the people who hired her.

The galactic war in the background

Outlaws is set between Episodes V and VI, when the Empire is hunting the rebels but the lives of millions are not defined by events at the front. For Kay, bounty hunters, debts and the chance to leave a planet safely matter more. This perspective gives familiar places an extra dimension: Tatooine exists not only as the home of the Skywalkers but also as part of a criminal economy. The droid ND-5 is also a reminder that the machines of past wars do not disappear after their makers win or lose; they pass to other owners and new tasks.

Route context

The Fight for Freedom

After Yavin the fight goes on: losing one station has not cost the Empire its fleet, its garrisons or its ability to hunt down its enemies. Luke trains, Leia supports the Alliance, and Han has to decide how far his loyalty to his friends extends. Alongside the main story, games show crime syndicates, Imperial special forces and pilots. The events after Endor are a reminder that a decisive victory and the end of a war do not happen at the same moment.
