About this story
What Luke was trying to rebuild
After the victory over the Empire, Luke takes on a task harder than winning any single battle: passing Jedi knowledge on to the next generation. He cannot simply return to the old Temple and restart the work of a large Order whose experienced members are mostly dead. It takes searching, teaching and his own decisions about what the new community should be. Among his students is his nephew, Ben Solo. That combines a mentor's duty with family responsibility and makes a possible failure especially painful for everyone close to them.
A night the heroes remember differently
In the sequel trilogy, the events that led to the destruction of the school are revealed through memories and conflicting explanations. It is important to distinguish what a character thought, what he did and how another person saw that act. The different versions of that night assign responsibility between mentor and student in different ways, so none of them should be taken as complete at first sight. The audience gets the picture gradually, together with heroes who have to revisit their own conclusions. The record does not reduce the catastrophe to a single line about a fire: that version would hide both the inner conflict and the gradual uncovering of what happened.
Why the consequences reach beyond the school
Luke takes the collapse of his project as proof of a wider failing in the Jedi tradition. Because of this, he withdraws not only from teaching but also from people who might need his help. For Leia and Han the aftermath of that night is not a military defeat, yet it deeply shapes their later paths. The catastrophe of 28 ABY explains why there is no new Order at the start of Episode VII. It also raises a question Rey will inherit later: how to teach after a failure without declaring teaching itself a lost cause.
Route context
The Skywalker Legacy
Luke's attempt to found a new school ends in disaster, and the New Republic underestimates the forces that grew out of the Empire's legacy. Rey, Finn and Poe come to the fight by different paths, while Leia once again rallies people around the Resistance. The final trilogy explores inheritance through choice: what to do with the mistakes of mentors, a dark family past and knowledge that has to be passed on. The announced story about Rey is marked separately as a future project.

Ben takes the name Kylo Ren and becomes Snoke's apprentice. Luke goes to Ahch-To, a world tied to the earliest origins of the Jedi, and tries to withdraw from the life of the galaxy. In "The Last Jedi" he admits to a brief moment of fear and to the consequences of how Ben read what he saw. Recovering the truth about that night matters for Rey's decision about whom she can trust, and how far.
Sensing darkness in the sleeping Ben, Luke ignited his lightsaber for a moment. Ben woke, saw his teacher standing over him with a weapon and took it as an attempt on his life; it was after this that the school was destroyed.
