About this story
A pursuit that leaves no time to recover
Episode VIII begins right after the previous film. The events at its end gave the Resistance no breathing room and did not remove the First Order's military advantage. The Resistance has to evacuate its base and keep its people alive in a fleet the enemy will not let go. When resources are limited, the cost of every attack changes: destroying a target successfully is not the same as making the right decision for the movement's survival. Poe is confronted with the difference between a pilot's personal courage and the responsibility of a commander who has to think about the days ahead, not just the current battle.
Rey finds a teacher who does not want to teach
On Ahch-To, Luke does not match the image of the savior Rey expects. He is fixed on the failure of his school and the mistakes of the Order, and he sees his own withdrawal as a way to stop disasters from repeating. Rey, by contrast, has abilities she does not understand and a galaxy that needs help now. Their conversations ask whether one failed attempt has the right to decide the future of every student. Meanwhile her connection with Kylo Ren offers a different version of the past, in which understanding someone's loneliness does not mean correctly judging their intentions.
A failure that can teach responsibility
Finn and Rose set out to find a way to save the fleet and end up among people who profit from the war. Their storyline widens the view of the conflict: violence is also sustained by those who wear no uniform and are happy to trade with every side. The heroes' decisions do not always bring the expected result, so the ability to rethink one's approach becomes important. All the storylines converge on one question: how to preserve the chance to keep fighting when a quick victory is out of reach. The answer determines whether the movement keeps the people who can carry on after this chase.
Route context
The Skywalker Legacy
Luke's attempt to found a new school ends in disaster, and the New Republic underestimates the forces that grew out of the Empire's legacy. Rey, Finn and Poe come to the fight by different paths, while Leia once again rallies people around the Resistance. The final trilogy explores inheritance through choice: what to do with the mistakes of mentors, a dark family past and knowledge that has to be passed on. The announced story about Rey is marked separately as a future project.

Kylo kills Snoke but does not take the path Rey hoped for: he seizes command of the First Order himself. Luke uses a Force projection to hold off the enemy on Crait and give the survivors time to escape. He dies after this effort, having reclaimed his role as a Jedi by protecting others. Rey keeps the Jedi texts, so the legacy does not vanish with the mentor.
The film begins right after the destruction of Starkiller Base, but the strike on the Hosnian system has left the New Republic without its seat of government, so the Resistance cannot count on support from the state. After Crait, only a small group of the movement remains, escaping aboard the Millennium Falcon.
