About this story
A decade between two crises
Ten years have passed since the events on Naboo. Anakin has grown up but is still Obi-Wan's Padawan, and Padmé represents her planet in the Senate. Meanwhile, systems led by Count Dooku are threatening to leave the Republic. An assassination attempt on the senator splits the heroes' tasks: Anakin is to guard her, and Obi-Wan is to find whoever ordered the attack. The detective and personal storylines unfold in parallel and gradually lead to preparations for war. The galaxy's institutions can no longer tell with any confidence whether an attack is random or part of a much larger plan.
An army the Council knew nothing about
The trail leads Obi-Wan to Kamino, where a clone army is being grown for the Republic from the genetic material of Jango Fett. Its creation is linked to the Jedi Sifo-Dyas, but the Council knows nothing of the order. The origin of such a convenient military resource ought to prompt a lengthy investigation. Yet the Separatist threat makes the question urgent: soldiers are needed, and soldiers already exist. This explains how the Republic comes to rely on a force whose true origins its leaders have not yet uncovered.
A personal prohibition and a state exception
While Obi-Wan closes in on Geonosis, Anakin and Padmé try to make sense of feelings that are incompatible with what is expected of them in their roles. Anakin also lives with the fear of losing his mother and runs up against his own inability to save everyone. In the Senate, a different dangerous step is taken: emergency circumstances are used to justify expanding the Chancellor's powers. The film connects these processes without simply equating them. Both a person and a state start making decisions whose consequences they promise to control later. It is from this point that "The Clone Wars" explores the long experience of living through the conflict.
Route context
Last Days of the Order
The blockade of Naboo exposes weaknesses in Republic politics, and the Separatist crisis later turns them into a galactic war. The Jedi become commanders of a clone army, the Senate grants the Chancellor emergency powers, and Anakin tries to reconcile his training with his fear for the people he loves. The films tell the central tragedy, while animation and games add the experience of soldiers, apprentices and ordinary people whose fates are decided by large-scale military choices.
