About this story
Thirty years after victory
The New Republic grew out of the Alliance but did not keep it as a standing military organization. While its citizens want peace, the Empire's heirs gather strength in the Unknown Regions and form the First Order. Leia founds the Resistance because she believes the threat is more serious than much of Republic politics is willing to admit. These three forces are in very different positions: a state, its external enemy and a small movement trying to act before it is too late. That is why the film should not be read as a situation where the Empire was simply renamed and everything else stayed the same.
Jakku and three different beginnings
Rey survives among the wreckage of the last war, waiting for her family to come back. Finn was raised to serve the First Order, but he refuses to take part in its violence and looks for a way out of a system that replaced even his name with a number. Poe Dameron is already a Resistance pilot carrying out a specific assignment from Leia. The droid BB-8, carrying a piece of a map, brings these paths together. Their different experiences shape their first decisions: one wants to go home, one wants to run as far as possible, one wants to finish the mission. A shared fight does not appear at once; it grows out of a gradual choice to support each other.
The search for Luke and a new encounter with the past
The missing Luke matters as a possible source of help, but also as a sign that the Jedi tradition can still affect the course of events. Rey runs into this legacy with no ready explanation for her own abilities. For Han and Leia the new conflict has a personal side that the film reveals gradually, while Kylo Ren tries to define himself through the legacy of Darth Vader. The film again sets origin and choice side by side: holding a familiar object or hearing a famous name does not mean knowing how to act. "The Last Jedi" picks up this uncertainty directly.
Route context
The Skywalker Legacy
Luke's attempt to found a new school ends in disaster, and the New Republic underestimates the forces that grew out of the Empire's legacy. Rey, Finn and Poe come to the fight by different paths, while Leia once again rallies people around the Resistance. The final trilogy explores inheritance through choice: what to do with the mistakes of mentors, a dark family past and knowledge that has to be passed on. The announced story about Rey is marked separately as a future project.

Starkiller Base destroys the Hosnian system along with the New Republic's seat of government. Kylo Ren, who is Ben Solo, kills Han, but the act does not free him from his inner conflict. The Resistance destroys the base, Rey defeats the wounded Kylo, and the map leads her to Luke on Ahch-To. A local victory comes at the same moment as a major political catastrophe.
