About this story
Why the victors have to run
Three years after Yavin, the Alliance is still outmatched by the Empire in resources and in its ability to control space. The hidden base on Hoth offers temporary protection but does not become an impregnable capital. Once it is discovered, the main goal is evacuating people rather than holding territory at any cost. Against this backdrop the Imperial pursuit is on a different scale than in the first film: Vader is deliberately hunting Luke, and his companions can no longer count on an ordinary escape from a single dangerous spot.
Two paths after Hoth
Luke heads to Dagobah to find Yoda and receives training that demands patience, attention to fear and a rethinking of his own expectations. Han, Leia, Chewbacca and C-3PO try to escape on a ship that constantly needs repairs. Their adventures combine closeness, quarrels and dependence on machinery that fails at the worst possible moment. Both storylines are about trust, but they test it in different ways. The student has to believe in the possibilities of the Force and in his teacher's experience; the fugitives have to decide whom they can hand their own safety to.
Cloud City and the price of a deal with the stronger side
At first Bespin looks like a way out of the chase: Lando Calrissian runs a successful city above the clouds and knows Han from the past. But a small independent community is vulnerable to the demands of Imperial military power. The intention to strike a deal to save the city gradually pushes its administrator into new concessions. For Luke the situation becomes a test of his ability to tell helping his friends apart from the haste the enemy is counting on. Episode V therefore leaves the heroes with a far more complicated understanding of war than the simple belief that courage is bound to end in victory.
Route context
The Fight for Freedom
After Yavin the fight goes on: losing one station has not cost the Empire its fleet, its garrisons or its ability to hunt down its enemies. Luke trains, Leia supports the Alliance, and Han has to decide how far his loyalty to his friends extends. Alongside the main story, games show crime syndicates, Imperial special forces and pilots. The events after Endor are a reminder that a decisive victory and the end of a war do not happen at the same moment.

On Bespin, Vader gets there ahead of the fugitives: under pressure from the Empire's terms, Lando gives up his friends, and Han, Leia and Chewbacca become bait to lure Luke away from Dagobah.
Vader tells Luke that he is his father. Defeat in the duel and the loss of his hand shatter the hero's belief that his own family stands at a safe distance from the dark side. Han is frozen in carbonite and handed over to Boba Fett. Lando helps the others escape, but getting their friend back will take a new operation.
