Star Wars: The Old Republic
The Republic and the resurgent Sith Empire are locked in a cold war. Eight class stories show the conflict through the eyes of Jedi, Sith, soldiers and smugglers. About this story
A peace treaty as the start of a new conflict
Several centuries separate SWTOR from the adventures of the first KOTOR. The Sith Empire has once again become a major military power and strikes at Coruscant. The treaty of 3,653 BBY ends the open war, but it leaves the Republic weakened and the victors dissatisfied that they do not yet control the whole galaxy. Roughly ten years later, border clashes, espionage and internal conspiracies make a new war more and more likely. The start of the game is best understood as an unstable truce during which both sides are already preparing their next strikes.
Eight views of one galaxy
On the Republic side you can play the stories of the Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Trooper and Smuggler; on the Imperial side, the Sith Warrior, Sith Inquisitor, Imperial Agent and Bounty Hunter. These storylines reveal different mechanisms of power. The Jedi face the duty of protecting others, the Sith compete for position in a brutal hierarchy, and intelligence operatives work amid distrust and hidden orders. On the same planet, different heroes can see opposite sides of a conflict. That is why the class stories should not be seen as one plot with eight sets of abilities.
Planets, the legacy of KOTOR and a long timeline
Coruscant is still being rebuilt after the attack, the Jedi have their base on Tython, and the Empire relies on Dromund Kaas and the traditions of Korriban. Familiar names make it possible to follow how a world's meaning changes over the centuries: a sacred place can become a training center, and a symbol of victory can become a reminder of defeat. The main class campaigns and the later expansions span different years, so a single date does not describe the whole body of events. The archive marks the opening period and does not mix it with later stages of the war or the stories of the Emperor.
Route context
Origins of the Force
The galaxy long before the familiar film saga: Rakatan domination, the rise of the Republic and wars that outlasted generations of Jedi and Sith. Ancient technology here is bound up with the Force, and political alliances do not yet look the way they will later. The events and games in this section belong to Legends. They show where Star Wars stories get their lost worlds, powerful relics and arguments about what the Jedi Order is for.
