About this story

Friends reunited and a new strike in preparation

The film opens with the rescue of Han from Jabba's clutches. The characters rely on familiar skills, but their coordination already reflects years of fighting side by side. Luke returns changed as well: after what he went through on Bespin he is confident in the Force, yet knows that physical courage is not enough. Freeing their friend lets the team regroup before a major Alliance operation. At the center of the military plans is the second Death Star, under construction near the forest moon of Endor and protected by a shield generator on the surface.

Three simultaneous trials

The attack requires the ground team, the fleet and Luke's personal mission to unfold side by side. Han and Leia have to open the way to the station, the pilots wait for their chance to strike, and Luke seeks a meeting with Vader. The local Ewoks prove to be important allies, because their knowledge of the terrain and readiness to defend their home shift the balance of power. This structure presents victory as the result of many different contributions. None of the heroes can simply stand in for all the others, even with the Force or command of a large ship.

What it means to defeat Vader

After the events on Bespin, Luke can no longer see his opponent purely as an outside evil. He wants to find out whether anything human remains in Vader, and in doing so he puts his own resolve at risk. The Emperor understands the power of fear and anger and tries to turn Luke's love for his friends into an instrument of control. The finale of the trilogy thus returns to the central question of the prequels: what does a person do when afraid of losing the people closest to them? Luke's answer matters not only for his own fate but also for the kind of Jedi legacy he will be able to pass on.

Route context

The Fight for Freedom

After Yavin the fight goes on: losing one station has not cost the Empire its fleet, its garrisons or its ability to hunt down its enemies. Luke trains, Leia supports the Alliance, and Han has to decide how far his loyalty to his friends extends. Alongside the main story, games show crime syndicates, Imperial special forces and pilots. The events after Endor are a reminder that a decisive victory and the end of a war do not happen at the same moment.

Luke goes to face Vader, convinced that something of Anakin Skywalker still remains in his father. The Emperor tries to turn this faith, along with Luke's attachment to his friends, against him.

Palpatine has laid a trap for the Alliance, but the rebels and the Ewoks destroy the shield generator, and the fleet strikes the station. Luke refuses to kill Vader in anger. When the Emperor tries to destroy his son, Vader turns on his master and saves Luke at the cost of his own life.

The deaths of the Emperor and the second Death Star are a decisive turning point, but they do not make every Imperial force vanish overnight. The next entries in the archive explore exactly this gap between a symbolic victory and the long process of ending a war.
